دراین سوره درباره ناسپاس منکر، منافق ریاکار و پاداش هر کدام شان، مورد بحث قرار داده میشود.اين سوره به كساني كه ظاهراً به دين گرويده‌اند، اما در عمل به دستورات ديني بي ‌توجهي ميکنند، هشدار ميدهد.در اين سوره پنج مورد از خصوصيات منکران قيامت (سر باز زدن از انفاق، راندن يتيمان و مسکينان، ريا، مسامحه در نماز و باز داشتن مردم از کمک به نياز مندان) مطرح و مورد بحث قرار گرفته است. در اين سوره اشاره به هرچيز از ريا و رياكاري و سهل انگاري در نماز دارد و ديگران را به اطعام مسكين و مستمند تشويق مي كند تا مثل ابو سفيان نباشند و به يتيمان احترام بگذارند و به روز جزا و انكار روز جزا و دادگاه بزرگ آن در عمل انسان هم اشاره شده است.به بيان ديگر سوره ماعون به اين حقيقت مهم اشاره ميکند که دينداري تنها اعتراف به وجود الله تعالي نيست، بلکه بايد همراه با اعمال صالح و شايسته و ترک بدی ها و اعمال ناشايست باشد.
